In preparation for the “Synesthesia Yellow” release parties this Fall, I’ll be hopping on various stages trying some new ideas out. Some of these shows will involve the building of a band, visuals and full-blown experience (more on that later), while some shows will still remain me + a DJ.
I’ve been trying to shy away from the emcee/DJ combo for a few reasons:
1. My new material doesn’t really work with a DJ. There are songs where I barely have a verse myself. A lot are filled with vocalists, talkboxes and live instrumentation. The song structures are really loose and unpredictable and they generally don’t work playing as a backing track from a DJ.
2. Rapping over the same instrumentals all the time has gotten boring as hell. It gets harder and harder to pull inspiration out of it.
So…
I’m going to try to borrow a page from the Louis C.K. playbook. When it’s just me (without the band, visuals, etc), I want to try to do something different every set. Just something to keep it exciting:
This Saturday, September 1st, I’ll be performing at the Polar Entertainment Showcase @ 83 Gallery (1038 N. High St.) alongside such fresh Columbus artists as J. Rawls, LCP, Middle Child, P Blackk, Copywrite and more.
I’ll be rocking a brief 15 minute set, mashing up random beats from Flying Lotus, Clams Casino, AarabMuzik, and more. I’ve been building the set and rapping my ass of in the car driving around the city having a fuckin’ ball.
This mash-up has me bringing out some songs and verses I either haven’t used in years or new ones I’ve never rocked before.
Here’s the line-up for the show. It starts at 7p and will sit right in the middle of Gallery Hop. So swing out, enjoy some really great food, drinks & music.
