Geoff Barrow: Portishead x Budden Shout Out (Part Deux) & Quakers

A few months ago, I posted about how Geoff Barrow of Portishead mentioned my 2008 Mash-Up Record “Mood Muzik’s Third” as his favorite Portishead-sampled album (grab it HERE for free). It blew my mind and probably (read:did) made me tear up as I read up. It was that awesome. Today I came across an interview he gave with MTV.com that dove into MM3rd a bit more. Enjoy the full read HERE. The exact quote in question:

Which sample of your music do you like best?

There’s a bootleg going around at the moment [by Ill Poetic] that’s a similar thing to [Dangermouse's] Grey Album, where he’s taken lots of Portishead stuff — though it might be easier ’cause the beats can be tuned towards rapping easier than raw Beatles records — but he’s put some stuff together and he’s chopped some stuff up. Whenever I’ve DJed or played on radio, it’s been really really good. It’s Joe Budden as the MC, and he’s a raw MC. There’s one where he does “Machine Gun” that’s really good. It goes back through the blender and ends up sounding like the Premo beat that I was trying to copy in the first place!

Geoff Barrow has recently been diving into the field of hip-hop production (a logical move if you know the Portishead sound), and has built a huge emcee collective called Quakers (including a friend of mine, QuiteNyce, who I’ll be dropping some material with later this Summer), whic his Available NOW on Stones Throw.
